Winding your way through the icy channels of the legendary Northwest Passage is history brought to life during this expedition in the Canadian High Arctic and Greenland. On this compelling 17-day journey, passengers retrace the steps of the intrepid Franklin Expedition, which left the shores of England in 1845 in search of the last unexplored section of the Northwest Passage—only to become permanently icebound. Its discovery more than a century and a half later by Norwegian Roald Amundsen was a much-celebrated moment in polar history. 

 

Explore colorful Inuit villages, and shop for traditional Inuit handicrafts. Hike the endless Arctic backdrop and marvel at the vast, colorful tundra. Keep your eyes peeled for the elusive and majestic creatures that make their home in this wilderness, such as whales, walrus, muskoxen and polar bears. Day 1 – Arrive Reykjavik
Arrive in Iceland and transfer to your included hotel. Explore Reykjavik’s modern Nordic culture, Viking heritage and vibrant waterfront.



Day 2 – Fly to Nuuk & Embark
Charter flight to Greenland’s capital, beautifully set on a fjord beneath Sermitsiaq Mountain. Depending on flight times, enjoy a brief city visit before boarding Ultramarine.



Day 3 – Davis Strait
Cross the Davis Strait while watching for seabirds and marine mammals. Attend expert presentations, mandatory expedition briefings and enjoy the ship’s amenities.



Days 4–5 – East Baffin Island
Visit Qikiqtarjuaq, the iceberg capital of Nunavut and gateway to Auyuittuq National Park. Meet the local Inuit community, browse traditional handicrafts, hike for panoramic views and look for narwhals, bowhead and orca whales, polar bears and seals. Continue to Isabella Bay, one of Canada’s most important bowhead whale feeding grounds, with opportunities for Zodiac cruising and kayaking.



Day 6 – Baffin Island and Heli Flightseeing
Explore the spectacular Icy Arm Fjord with its glaciers and towering cliffs. Watch for polar bears, walrus, seals and seabirds. Weather permitting, enjoy Ultramarine’s signature helicopter flightseeing experience together with Zodiac excursions.

Days 7–9 – Northwest Passage
Explore Lancaster Sound, one of the Arctic’s richest wildlife regions. Visit Dundas Harbour, Croker Bay and historic Beechey Island, where Franklin’s ill-fated 1845 expedition wintered. Learn about the dramatic history of Arctic exploration while visiting the graves of three crew members. Cruise beneath the bird cliffs of Prince Leopold Island and visit the remains of Port Leopold trading post.

Day 10 – East Coast of Baffin Island
Cruise south along Baffin Island’s spectacular coastline while enjoying wildlife viewing, photography and onboard presentations.

Day 11 – Sam Ford Fjord
Discover one of the Arctic’s most dramatic fjords, where sheer granite walls rise directly from the sea. Conditions permitting, enjoy Zodiac cruising, kayaking, hiking and wildlife viewing.

Day 12 – Davis Strait
Relax onboard as the ship crosses back toward Greenland. Continue learning from the expedition team and enjoy the ship’s facilities.

Days 13–15 – West Greenland
Explore Ilulissat and the UNESCO-listed Ilulissat Icefjord, filled with enormous icebergs from the Sermeq Kujalleq Glacier. Wander the colorful town, birthplace of Arctic explorer Knud Rasmussen, and watch for whales. Cruise spectacular Eternity Fjord with opportunities for Zodiac excursions and hiking among towering mountains. Visit Maniitsoq, the “Venice of Greenland,” surrounded by dramatic peaks and summer humpback whales.

Day 16 – Kangerlussuaq
Sail through the long Kangerlussuaq Fjord before disembarking. Transfer to the airport for your charter flight to Iceland and overnight in Reykjavik.

Day 17 – Depart Iceland
After breakfast, transfer independently to Keflavik Airport for your onward journey or continue exploring Iceland.
